A coat can be a big purchase, especially if you’re looking for one that is going to last throughout the years and, perhaps more importantly, throughout the different trends of different colder weather seasons. So, when you’re thinking about jumping head first into the buying a really expensive coat thing, you might as well add one other requirement to the list of reasons why you would splurge: it’s convertible.

Much like how convertible cars are a lot cooler than their hard top versions, the convertible coat can be styled inside out, or parts of it can even be removed. With this type of coat, you’ll also be getting a vest, a cropped top and more.

Unlike convertible cars, there isn’t really much of a downside here. With it comes to autos, a convertible might mean dangerous roll-over conditions (but here’s to hoping that never happens) or a really loud highway drive. For the coats, there’s no such downside. They are just as warm as non-convertible coats and depending the kind you get, you might not even be able to tell that it is convertible.

We’ve rounded up our favorite versions, and yes, they are a splurge. But we promise, it’s definitely worth it.
