Didn't Get Your Hands On An Xbox Kinect? Here's the One Gift That Will Make Up for It

It’s been forecasted that Microsoft will sell 5 million Xbox Kinect gaming systems this year–let’s keep in mind, it was just released in November. So 5 million Kinects gone in 2 months? It’s no wonder the only place you can still get one is on eBay.

If you don’t want to go that route, though, there is an alternative:

Feast your eyes on the HP Touchsmart PC (also known as my latest obsession). I was sent a demo computer to review and (I’m sorry, MAC), I’m so hooked. There are too many features to list here–plus, I’m sure I don’t know all this computer can do–but here are a few things I love so far:

  • It’s touchscreen. Duh. As the name implies, you can totally control this computer by navigating with your fingers on the screen. This is hands-down what I love the most. It makes scrolling on webpages so much easier and it puts an end to fights over the mouse. It also comes with a wireless keyboard and mouse, but you don’t have to use them. I don’t use the mouse at all.
  • The scrolling desktop. You can create all kinds of “magnets” on your desktop–everything from video reminders for your kids to do their homework to playlists for your upcoming holiday party–and because the desktop scrolls, there is unlimited space. You can create as many magnets as you want and there’s a simple “find” tool that helps locate things when the desktop (inevitably) gets a little messy.
  • The recipe organizer. Anyone who likes to cook and try new recipes will love this. Yes, you can add your own recipes to this app-like feature that comes standard in the carousel, but what’s even cooler is that it can export recipes from websites. So when you mother-in-law asks you to bring a pecan pie for Christmas, but you can’t remember if you got the recipe from or, problem solved. Just export the recipes you love from your fave websites and they’re always there on your desktop.

There’s more–a lot more. But what makes this computer so amazing is discovering all it can do for yourself. So get to your local electronic store and get up close and personal with it. You’ll be convinced within minutes, I promise.

In general, though, I think this is the most perfect computer for families I’ve ever come across. The touchscreen makes it great for family computer time because no one person is in control. In the same way a Kinect gets everyone involved, so does this computer.

If everyone in your household has been really, really good this year, this is about the best gift you could give them. So, what do you say, Santa?
