Warmer weather has finally arrived and if you live on the East Coast you know it’s been a long time coming. Along with warmer temps, however, comes the challenge of reorganizing your closet–you’re way overdue to swap out those winter coats, scarves and boots to make room for those shorts and bikinis. Can I get a “Hallelujah!”
This past weekend, after some procrastination, I finally got down to it. It was definitely a major project, but totally worth it. Ready to give your closet a summer overhaul? Don’t remove a single article of clothing before reading these closet refresh tips.
Sort. Start out by making piles. These should include a donation pile of items you no longer want, one for winter items that you may want to vacuum seal and store more compactly, and a “yes” pile for everything you want to wear for the new season.
Organize by weight & texture. In addition to separating out items by category like dresses, shirts, T-shirts, jeans etc. you should also think about sorting by the texture and weight of the fabric. For example, all your lighter cotton tees should be grouped together, while your more fancy and wrinkle prone silk tops should be hung together. This makes life a lot easier on a really hot day when you want to reach for something lighter; you will know exactly where to go in your closet.
Start a ‘maybe’ pile. Don’t feel overwhelmed or get discouraged if you come across items that you’re unsure about. Throw them into a ‘maybe’ pile and once you have finished sorting, go back and decide what to do. Usually, after you see how limited you still are on space you’ll be able to more easily part with some items. And hey, if you are still conflicted, think back if you wore it within the last 3 months or the prior season. If not, it’s probably time to let it go. Also, it’s totally ok to allow yourself a couple of guilty pleasures. I just couldn’t part with my Juicy tracksuit from seven years ago-shh!
Don’t forget about your jewelry and make-up. Getting refreshed for summer also means it’s time to reorganize your jewelry and makeup. Perspex trays are great ways to organize both and it’s also a chance to get a little creative and add that personal touch. I headed to a local flea market in my neighborhood and scored some great finds like trinkets and crystal boxes to display my jewelry and bright lipstick colors for summer.
Have fun! While the process may seem a little daunting, it should still be fun. Blast some music and take breaks in between sorting. I had my Bottled Starbucks® Iced Coffee handy for each break to help recharge and keep me energized (plus it’s only 50-120 calories per bottle)–perfect for a summer pick me up.
