Trend Alert: Buckle Up For Fashion
October 14, 2005
Buckles are BIG. Not only in terms of importance for your fall and winter look, but also in their shape and size. A big belt buckle is just the right way to set off your denim, and perfect to spark up a plain black suit. Here are my three favourites:
Victoria, BC-based Shi Studio uses classic Chinese silk brocade in a modern presentation with their jewelry and belt buckle line. Every time I wear mine, I am stopped by women who ask me where I got the belt. I am already debating over which fabric pattern I might go for next simply because of how well they accessorize both casual and dressy ensembles. There’s no way I could stop at just one. You can find them at shistudio.com.
I am also loving Toronto’s Bennie and Olive line, which uses photographs and other iconic images on their buckles. My absolute favourite is the Oh Canada! one but close seconds are the buckle with the photo of Old New York, and the lovely Cameo buckle. You can buy Bennie and Olive and virginthreads.com.
Californian Nic Norman’s collection of buckles rounds out my top three list. Her lines include the Girls Night Out collection, custom photo and name belts, the mod Carnaby Street collection, and my favourites, the Swanky collection. Available at nicnorman.com.
As an accessory to add to a plain outfit or a way to make a real statement, big and bold belt buckles are a great way to go. Wear them right, and you might just start to people exclaim, “What a waist!”
