Trend Alert: Free Katie
July 6, 2005
Tom Cruise was at it again on Friday, this time attacking Matt Lauer on NBC’s Today show by saying that he didn’t know what he was talking about. It was just the latest in a series of bizarre public appearances by Cruise that began when he made his manic declarations of love for Katie Holmes on “Oprah.” With the heavy coverage of her plans to study Scientology, and his marriage proposal to her at the Eiffel Tower, we’re all left thinking that their love is either a publicity stunt or just plain creepy.
In response, Los Angeles graphic designer Sheila Cameron created freekatie.net, a website that encourages people to “help liberate Katie, a young, gifted actress held captive by forces we may never understand.” The site’s tees, which have slogans like “Free Katie,” “Run Katie Run,” and “Sacrificial Virgins are so third century,” have been spotted everywhere from People magazine to the premiere of “HERBIE: Fully Loaded.” To do your part in saving Katie from Tom’s evil grips, check out freekatie.net.
