Roll up your sleeves? Not this season. From bell and balloon to lantern and flutter, the new fashion focal point is the sleeves. Whether it’s a small, delicate ruffle or a full-arm billow, you can say goodbye (for now, at least) to the days of straight and narrow.
As much as I’m loving these new sleeve silhouettes, it is important to get the proportions right. These new shapes range from sexy, subtle to very voluminous, so we’re all susceptible to going a little overboard. Here’s the little catch phrase I’ve adopted to keep in mind when shopping for a few new pieces: boho, not Bozo (the clown, that is).
Fall’s new fashion-forward sleeves aren’t limited to sweaters and blouses, so don’t forget to check out the season’s dresses and coats that have been femmed up with ruffles, ties and a little volume. If you’re not completely ready to embrace big balloon sleeves, this dainty white Juicy Couture Pin Tucked Button Blouse ($158) is a little more subdued. J. Crew also has a floral print flutter sleeve dress ($145) that’s not too extreme. Lux's striped lantern-sleeve sweater ($58) is also very retro chic, fabulous for fall.
