Who Knew?! TV Makes Your Kid Fat, Dumb and Poorly Behaved...

Okay, wait, before you go tossing that brand new Sony flat screen in the trash, here are all of the findings from a recent study on children and TV.

Scientists in Seattle set out to investigate possible links between children’s television habits and the effects on their sleep patterns. Here’s what the study found:

  • Children who were exposed to violent media (including TV, video games and online content) tended to have more sleep problems than those who weren’t exposed to violent media.
  • Children who watched television after 7 p.m. were significantly more likely to have one or more sleep issues.
  • Children with TVs in their rooms watched 40 minutes more TV than the average and had more difficulties with sleep.

So the next logical question is, how do sleep issues impact children? And this is where things get scary. Children with sleep problems are at risk to develop weight problems, cardiovascular issues, behavior problems, mental health issues and learning difficulties/poor academic performance.

So the moral of that story is, turn off the TV asap! I am definitely guilty of the turning the television on after 7 p.m. (Clearly, that’s when all my good reality shows come on.) But at least a few nights each week, I am going to try to start our nightly reading routine a little earlier. I know how important sleep is and I don’t want to get my little girl into any bad habits this early in life. Here are some of the books we’ll be reading instead of watching TV:
