Vests: Fading Trend or Fashion Staple?

What: Vests

Why: I’ve been waiting for vests to fall into the “out” category on the lists of Vanity Fair, People, or other glossies for several months now. But happily, vests don’t seem headed for the left-hand side of the column anytime soon. This might be because vests are the clothes equivalent of a jack-of-all-trades. They can be worn with tailored pants or a skirt to achieve the hip, yet professional, menswear look. Or, they can be paired with any number of casual options such as shorts (my personal favorite), skinny jeans, or trouser pants. They can even be paired with a floral, feminine, dress to provide balance for a look that otherwise leans toward Polly Anna.

Plus — and I think this might be the real reason for fashion editors’ reluctance to throw a down-turned thumb — the vest is an almost universally flattering piece. Buy one that nips in at the waist to accentuate curves or wear a mini vest over a long shirt for excellent tummy coverage. This versatile trend piece isn’t showing any signs of fading from the limelight, especially for these celebrity vest-wearers.

Hop on the menswear bandwagon, as Mandy Moore has, with this Grace Sun Mini Vest ($155 @ blaec) or a less expensive version in sateen ($25 @ Victoria’s Secret).
