We Asked A Doc: Can Any Cream Really Erase Wrinkles?
January 4, 2016
When it comes to skincare products, it’s really important to read the fine print. While some creams and serums may claim to have the power to make wrinkles and fine lines vanish, that’s very rarely the case. In fact, when it comes to most creams you can buy at the drugstore or beauty supply store, all roads usually lead to the M-word: minimize. Key effective ingredients present in certain products can minimize the appearance of aging skin, but if you’re looking to complete banish wrinkles, you’re going to a need a dermatologist’s help with that.
The bright side? There are plenty of products out there that can successfully help with preventing future damage. “If you’re looking to ward off wrinkles, implement a skincare regimen with retinoids or retinol at night along with antioxidants during the day,” says Dr. Jill Waibel, owner of Miami Dermatology and Laser Institute.
As for minimizing the appearance of existing wrinkles, Waibel says the more hydrated your skin is, the more supple it looks, giving you that super smooth glow. “Ingredients that are effective moisturizers include topical hyaluronic acids and SkinCeuticals B5 hydrating gel. The latter is a favorite because it hydrates all skin types and it is a serum that does not leave a thick layer. This allows you to apply it right before your makeup.”
Rose Laudisio, owner of RL Advanced Laser and Skin Care Center and founder of the XO8 Placenta Stem Cell Mask, suggest four additional ingredients that contain highly concentrated anti-aging actives that will help minimize wrinkles and fine lines:
1. Ovine sheep placenta extract with pluripotent stem cell. This ingredient may sound scary, but it’s actually one of the richest resources of cytokines, growth factors, fibroblasts, nutrients and immune co-factors, which lead to the multiplication and rejuvenation of healthy cells.
Product Pick: X08 Mask ($50)
2. CoQ10. This super ingredient neutralizes molecular oxidation, limits or prevents free-radical damage, stimulates the production of collagen fibers and elastin and penetrates the skin’s surface to the living layers of the epidermis, reducing oxidative stress.
Product Pick: DHC Coenzyme Q10 Eye Cream ($39)
3. Plant collagen. Here’s the long list of skin benefits a plant collagen like acacia Senegal offers: strengthens blood vessels; develops new skin tissue; restores skin elasticity and youthfulness; stimulates the body’s natural collagen; provides nutrients and moisture; eliminates flaky skin and wrinkles.
Product Pick: KAPLAN MD Cellular Rejuvenating Concentrate ($170)
3. Grape Seed Oil. This miracle ingredient contains fatty acids crucial to skin. It also promotes skin tightening and cell membrane health, contains powerful antioxidants that diminish the sun’s damaging effects, lessens free radical damage and contains gingko biloba which has anti-inflammatory and calming effects and also helps in the production of collagen and elastins.
Product Pick: Now Foods Pure Grapeseed Oil ($6.59)
If you’re searching for ways to really and truly get rid of the wrinkles you have, prescription strength retinoids and in-office procedures such as chemical peels, neurotoxin injections (Botox), dermal filler injections, and resurfacing devices are still the industry gold standard, says Dr. Hadley King, MD, dermatologist at NYC’s SKINNEY Medspa. That is, until someone comes out with an OTC cream that can work miracles. Come on, science, we’re pulling for you to make it happen.
