We Want To Know: Does Mouthwash Really Serve A Purpose?

There are a bunch of different ways to take care of your teeth, mainly by brushing, flossing and using mouthwash. But does mouthwash really do anything? Most people use mouthwash as a way to freshen up their mouth or combat bad breath, but some companies claim their products do way more than just freshen breath. Here’s what you need to know about mouthwash.

If you’re using mouthwash solely as a way to clean your teeth/mouth, then that’s no good at all. Mouthwash alone will not keep your mouth clean or your breath fresh. However, using mouthwash in tandem with brushing and flossing, you can cut down on cavities, fight gum disease and more.

It’s important to check the ingredients in your mouthwash to know what they will actually help. For instance, a fluoride mouthwash will help reduce cavities and an antibacterial mouthwash will help with gum disease and soothing canker sores. Before you grab a random bottle of mouthwash off the shelf hoping to take care of a specific issue, remember to take a look at its main ingredients.

The bottom line is that mouthwash serves a purpose only when being used in addition to brushing and flossing. Don’t expect to have good dental hygiene when you’re only using mouthwash.

Don’t miss the one thing you shouldn’t do when brushing your teeth and how to whiten your teeth with a banana peel!
