Anyone who has long hair, male or female, most likely keeps an elastic hair tie on their wrist at all times. However, one woman from Philadelphia named Audree Kopp is making people think twice about keeping a hair tie around their wrist 24/7.
Kopp was hospitalized with a life-threatening infection that was caused from bacteria getting under her skin. The bacteria came from the hair tie she wore around her wrist and it created a large abscess that required surgery after antibiotics couldn’t treat it.
“I didn’t believe it at first,” Kopp told CBS Philadelphia. “I thought that it was a spider bite, or something else, not from wearing hair-ties.” She said the bump just kept getting “bigger and bigger” so she decided to go to the emergency room. If Kopp didn’t catch it in time she could have gotten sepsis, which is a life-threatening complication of an infection.
