Web Site Review: Thread Banger

I have a confession to make: I can’t sew a button to save my life. It’s a skill I should have learned as soon as I could handle a needle, and it’s one I could have used many times. As it is, I have a collection of jackets and button-downs each with one wonky, dangling, off-center button held on, however flimsily, by yards and yards of thread.

Now there’s no excuse. Thread Banger, a Web site for people who create their own fashion—and people like me who only wish they could—posts a weekly series of online tutorial videos hosted by crafty Threadheads, Rob and Corinne. Watching the videos made me yearn to learn the ins and outs of a sewing machine, and gave me all kinds of great ideas on how to turn my old stuff into hip stuff I wouldn’t just wear on laundry day.

Learn the right way to sew a button, hem your pants like a pro, or give your button-downs a fitted, tailored-to-you look. And for the non-remedial sewers—or just plain crafty fashionistas—there are tutorials on giving your jeans a vintage facelift and creating one-of-a-kind shoulder bags for little to no cash. New videos are posted every Friday, so keep checking back for more hip how-to’s.
