When I think of gingham, two things come to mind: Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz and, unfortunately, “Gangham Style.” (Thanks, Psy, for preventing us from ever pronouncing “gingham” correctly again).
The pattern tends to feel more old McDonald than fashion forward (although I will admit that gingham bathing suits can be pretty cute). This spring, the staid fabric got a much-needed makeover from the likes of Marc by Marc Jacobs (above) and Kate Spade, who gladly accepted the challenge of making gingham “cool.” Marc Jacobs, for one, showed an oversized version of the print in red and pink bold check. It took a little convincing, but I’ve come to the conclusion that gingham doesn’t have to be reserved for picnic blankets or ladies who lunch. (This does not, however, prevent the song from getting stuck in my head).
Plus, Michelle Obama rocked a gingham dress, and she made it look pretty awesome. Convinced?
