Women Everywhere Are Taking A Stand Against Makeup Shaming #ThePowerOfMakeup
June 26, 2015
Social media started out as a just that…a way to be social. These days, however, social media has taken a turn for the worse. Social media users, mostly on Instagram, are flooding other people’s photos with negative and shameful comments. YouTube blogger NikkieTutorials is taking a stand and empowering women (and men) everywhere to stand up to the haters with the most epic anti-shaming makeup campaign. You might have seen the trending hashtag #ThePowerOfMakeup or the numerous pictures of women flaunting a face half done with makeup. This is what it’s all about.
NikkieTutorials posted a video to YouTube in May and since then it has garnered over 17 million views. In it she shows the power of makeup in a positive light. Makeup is fun, not shameful. Makeup is used to make women feel confident and sexy, not insecure. “I feel like lately makeup shaming has become a thing. It’s as if putting makeup on to have fun is a shame,” she captioned the viral video.
The whole idea is absolutely amazing. I personally love wearing makeup. Of course, there are days when I proudly go out into the world with a completely bare face, but makeup makes me feel confident. I feel good when I’ve perfected a smokey eye or my eyelashes are on point, or uh, on fleek. Wearing makeup is nothing to be ashamed of. It’s sad that we’ve gotten to the point where people always feel the need to criticize and put down one another on a daily basis. Let’s not assume someone is wearing makeup because they are insecure or trying to get attention. Perhaps they just want to have fun and experiment.
On that note, I applaud you NikkieTutorials for igniting women and men to take a stand against the shamers. Be sure to check out #ThePowerOfMakeup on social media, you might just be inspired to share your own picture.
