Finding out that St. Ives Apricot Scrub is the worst product you can use on your skin is the reason why I have trust issues. It smells amazing and you would assume that because of the exfoliating beads, you’re doing major justice to your skin. Yeah, think again.
The problem here isn’t just this particular product, it’s the concept of using face scrubs as a whole. Don’t get me wrong, we should be washing our faces every day and ridding ourselves of the dead skin cells. BUT, there is such a thing as overdoing it and it’s called over-exfoliating.
Trust me, I get it. I’ve fallen victim to scrubbing my face with the best smelling bead-infused washes. But we need to disciplines ourselves to stop doing this because it’s hurting us way more than it’s helping us. Dr. Ben Johnson, founder of Osmosis Pur Medical Skincare, shared with Bustle, “You’re actually removing the protective barrier that your skin has… Once removed, your skin is exposed to environmental toxins and sun damage, causing aging.” Then Johnson later advises that we should only exfoliate no more than two to three times a week.
The trick is to lean towards the creamier facial cleansers. You may not feel like you’re doing as much justice as you would like when cleaning you face, but I promise the end result will be worth it. Another tip I can offer you is that we should only focus on cleaning our faces at night. It goes without saying that the end of the day is when our skin is the most exposed to dirt and oil, but if we heavily wash our faces twice a day, we wind up stripping away whatever good is left on our skin. Even washing your face with just water every morning will dry out your skin, especially if you’re a fan of hot showers. Oh, and on that note… please don’t wash your face in the shower! The hot water is far too harsh on your skin and it’s recommended that lukewarm to cool is our best bet.
If you’re like me, you were guilty of all the above and now you may be a little overwhelmed. There’s a lot that goes into skin care but considering we’re working with our faces here, we should really make sure we’re aware of what we’re doing because we may have been our own problem. Apparently, I was!
