You're Doing It Wrong: Washing Your Hands In A Public Bathroom

I have no shame in admitting that I’m a straight-up germaphobe. I don’t like touching things in public like subway poles, stair railings, etc. but I do it because it’s a part of life. However, there’s one public domain that irks me to my core: public bathrooms. While the thought of public bathrooms is nauseating, I, obviously have to use them. I try not to touch anything in a public bathroom with my bare hands because God only knows the types of germs that are festering.

There’s actually a specific way you should wash your hands while using a public bathroom, or any bathroom for that matter. I bet most people don’t even do half of these steps. Ew. Check it out below.

**Before I even start washing my hands, I check out the drying situation. If there are paper towel dispensers that aren’t automatic, then dispense the paper towel before you wash your hands so you don’t have to touch the dirty dispenser after washing. The paper towel will be ready to grab once your hands are clean.

1. Wet your hands with clean water.

2. Add soap and scrub your hands, underneath fingernails and in between fingers. Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. It’s helpful to hum the Happy Birthday song twice.

3. Rinse off the soap with clean water.

4. Dry hands with a clean paper towel/cloth or air dry. If you can, turn off the faucet with a paper towel.

Use the paper towel or toilet paper to open the bathroom door. Rule of thumb: once you wash your hands, try not to touch any surface in the bathroom that has germs like the paper towel dispenser, the faucet or the door handle. Yes, of course, there will be circumstances where this is difficult, but do your best to avoid it.
