The '1% Rule' Fitness Experts Say Can Transform Your Body Over Time: 'Committing To One Thing'

If you’ve ever tried to transform your body with strict meal plans, intense workouts, and an all-or-nothing mindset—only to burn out weeks later—you’re not alone. Fitness experts are increasingly pointing to a much simpler (and far more sustainable) strategy known as the “1% rule,” and it’s quickly becoming a go-to approach for long-term weight loss and lifestyle change.

The concept recently gained traction thanks to fitness creator Blissmode Fitness, who opened up about her own journey with extreme highs and lows. After dropping to 98 pounds through “severe restriction of food” and “overly exercising,” she said the approach ultimately backfired, leading her to gain weight up to 168 pounds.

“I was a mess,” she admitted, explaining that the cycle of restriction and overdoing cardio left her feeling “burnt out” and stuck in patterns that “always led me to the exact same place.”

1% Rule Explained By Fitness Pro

That’s when she unintentionally discovered what she now credits for her transformation: “I was just going to make myself 1% better than I was yesterday,” she said. Instead of jumping into another extreme routine, she focused on doing just one small thing better each day.

That might sound almost too simple—but that’s the point.

“What that meant was I knew that I could not just hop in and go through this crazy…meal plan…doing cardio in the morning and working out at night,” she explained. “Because that always led me to the exact same place.” Rather than chasing perfection, she shifted her focus to consistency. One day it might be adding a few extra minutes of movement. The next, it could be drinking more water or making a healthier dinner choice.

“Everybody can commit to one thing, right?” she said. “That’s all you’re doing—you’re committing to one thing, not 20 things.” And that’s where the 1% rule stands out from traditional fitness advice. Instead of overwhelming you with drastic changes, it makes progress feel manageable—even “stupid easy,” as she puts it. “Can you go walk for 10 minutes instead of sitting on your couch on your phone? Can you drink water instead of soda at lunch?” she asked, highlighting just how small these shifts can be.

Over time, those small actions compound. What starts as a single daily improvement gradually turns into a series of consistent habits. “Before you know it, you’re committing to all of these little things consistently over time,” she said. And while the process may not be flashy, it’s effective: “Over a long period—which is not sexy—you’re gonna completely change your life…your habits…you’re gonna be a completely different person.”

The bottom line

Fitness experts agree that this slow-and-steady method is often the missing piece for people who struggle to maintain results. Extreme plans may deliver quick changes, but they’re rarely sustainable. The 1% rule, on the other hand, builds a foundation you can actually stick with.

The takeaway is simple but powerful: you don’t need to overhaul your entire life overnight to see real change. By focusing on just one small improvement each day, you create momentum—and that momentum is what leads to lasting transformation.
