The universe of tech gadgets and goodies is immense. It’s so expansive that it can be a real challenge figuring out which devices are worth the splurge and which are better left on store shelves. Just because a tech gadget can do something better than a similar device doesn’t mean it’s doing it well enough to justify its cost. Other times, there are devices that show potential, but haven’t reached the point where they’re truly note-worthy and deserving of your money, time, and attention. If you’re confused by this vast market and could use a little help figuring out which gadgets to pass up, these tech experts are in total agreement: these two tech gadgets are never worth the money

Smartphone Virtual Reality Headsets

As much of a rush as it is to put on a VR headset and experience virtual reality, smartphone VR headsets simply aren’t there yet in terms of their features, some experts say.

“Smartphone VR headsets are often marketed as an affordable alternative to high-end VR devices, but the experience they offer is often lacking,” said Simon Bacher, co-founder, and CEO of the startup Simya Solutions. “The limited hardware and software capabilities of most smartphones mean the visuals and sound are often subpar, the motion tracking is imprecise, and the overall experience is underwhelming.”

Tech Expert Thomas Niemczewski, CEO and founder at Dream Chasers, says most virtual reality headsets simply aren’t worth the cost (yet). “While virtual reality headsets can be fun and immersive, the reality is that for most people, the technology simply isn’t worth the cost,” Niemczewski said. “There are a limited number of games available, and the graphics and experience can be pretty underwhelming. If you’re looking for a more affordable way to experience virtual reality, consider investing in a Google Cardboard headset or a cheaper mobile-based headset.”

Smartwatches

Smartwatches make you feel like you’re living in the future, for sure. But some tech experts say their cost can’t be justified because they can be a hassle to use.

“Smartwatches typically offer more features than traditional watches, but they’re also much more expensive,” Bacher said. “In addition, most smartwatches require regular charging and have limited battery life, making them more of a hassle to use than a traditional watch. If you’re looking for a watch with more features, it’s best to invest in a traditional watch with a few bells and whistles instead.”

Smartwatches are more often than not overpriced and lack the features that make them worth the cost, Niemczewski added. “While there are some models that may offer a few useful features such as notifications, there are much more affordable alternatives that are just as effective,” he said. “Consider buying a fitness tracker or a basic smartwatch instead that will help you track your activity and sleep patterns at a fraction of the cost.”

There are plenty of tech gadgets that are worth the money and will be great additions to your growing collection of tech goodies. But these two picks — VR headsets and smartwatches — may still need improvements made to their design before they become mainstays.
