A Neurologist Says You Should Be Taking These 'Top 3' Supplements For Brain Health And Disease Prevention: B-Vitamins, More

While it may sound obvious, one of the best ways you can take care of yourself is by looking after your brain health. Taking supplements is a habit typically used by those looking to lose weight or improve symptoms of a specific condition, but they can also be used to enhance the function of your brain.

There are so many supplements on the market that it can be hard to know which ones to take to help out your brain, but luckily, a neurologist and content creator, Dr. Kellyann Niotis, shared an Instagram post about her “top 3 supplements” for “brain health and neurodegenerative disease prevention” that can help you get started. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3s are most commonly known for being found in fatty foods like salmon, avocados, and more. If you're not getting enough of them in your diet, you can take them via supplements and receive many benefits, including some positive improvements in your brain.

 

Dr. Niotis says that omega-3s "support the structure and function of brain cell membranes and have anti-inflammatory effects."

B-Vitamins (B-12, Folate, B6)

There are several different B vitamins out there, but specific ones like B12 are known to be great for the brain. According to Dr. Niotis, they "regulate homocysteine levels," and play a vital role in the "production of the fatty membranes that surround nerve cells."

 

B vitamins are also "important for DNA and RNA synthesis." While you may already be getting in a lot of vitamin B from your diet, Dr. Niotis suggests taking around 500mcg of B12 daily, 800mcg of folate, and <20mg of B6.

Theracurmin

Theracurmin is a buzzing supplement in the health and wellness community. It's the bioavailable form of curcumin, the active compound that makes turmeric so healthy for us.

 

Dr. Niotis notes that taking theracurmin via supplements may "reduce neuroinflammation and protect key regions impacted by neurodegenerative disease."

 

The dose you should take of theracurmin depends on the brand you take, but she recommends Cardiotabs' product.
