One of today’s scariest diseases is cancer, a disease that’s been changing and hurting people’s lives for hundreds of years. Therefore, it’s important we do whatever we can to prevent it.

Of course, there’s no way to fully prevent cancer, as it often develops due to things out of our control. However, there are some very crucial aspects of our lifestyle that we can control, like whether or not we smoke and drink, and what we eat. While there are various processed foods and sugary beverages that can increase your risk of cancer, there are plenty of nutritious and healthy foods that health experts suggest people eat to prevent cancer, especially those who are over a certain age and at a higher risk of developing it. We spoke with health experts, including Dr. Daniel Landau with The Mesothelioma Center, and nutritionist Stephanie Hopkins with The Gathering Place, about six “anti-cancer” foods that women over 40 should add to their diet. Read more about them below.

1. Cruciferous Vegetables

This answer may not be too surprising, as many of us know just how important vegetables are and how much their nutrients and vitamins can benefit our bodies. However, cruciferous vegetables, which are a particularly healthy group of plants, like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and more, have cancer-fighting nutrients.

"Cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and kale, are rich in glucosinolates that support detoxification and cellular protection," says Hopkins.

2. Salmon & Fish

Fish is an excellent protein option for numerous reasons, from its protein content to the healthy fats it can carry, as well as the wide variety of species. Salmon is particularly beneficial, with its high level of Omega-3 fatty acids and more, which health experts say can not only improve your brain health, but also lower your risk of cancer.

"The Mediterranean diet is the diet I most often recommend to my patients," explains Dr. Landau. "Diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids have shown lower cancer rates in several clinical trials."

3. Garlic

Garlic is not only famous for its potent and delicious flavor, but it's also extremely healthy! Although it may make your breath smell pretty intense, there are several nutrients and compounds found in garlic that can reduce your risk of cancer, boost your immunity, and more.

"A natural source of allicin and sulfur-containing compounds that may help inhibit the growth of cancerous cells and support immune health," notes Hopkins.

4. Green Tea

Green tea is almost like a miracle beverage, as it can help with so many of your bodily functions and can even fight against diseases. Many health experts suggest drinking one to two mugs of green tea a day, for its benefits have the potential to make a big difference in your health.

Hopkins calls green tea "a natural source of allicin and sulfur-containing compounds that may help inhibit the growth of cancerous cells and support immune health."

5. Nuts

Nuts, especially Brazil nuts, have many properties that make them a super healthy snack. If you need a better snack to have on the go that can also lower your risk of cancer and other diseases, enjoying a few nuts every day is a great option. Dr. Landau says that "Brazil nuts have shown lower cancer risk" in various studies. However, it is important to note that you can only eat a small serving of Brazil nuts, which is about an ounce at a time.

6. Ginger

Not only is it strong in flavor, but it's also strong in health benefits! Ginger is a nice plant to keep in your diet, with several properties that can benefit your stomach when it's upset, and also boost your immunity. Adding it to recipes or enjoying it in items like homemade ginger shots can also reduce your risk of diseases.

"Known for its anti-inflammatory and digestive benefits, ginger contains gingerol, which may help calm inflammation in the stomach lining," explains Hopkins.
