This Bizarre Celebrity Red Carpet Trend Is Actually SO Chic & About To Be Everywhere

An off-the-wall look–giant, oversized jackets–quietly became one of fall’s biggest trends this week.

If you blinked, you might have missed it. But we’ve got the receipts: these boxy, menswear inspired suits are about to be EVERYWHERE. This week alone, there have been four major celebrity looks involving oversized suiting:

On Monday, Lady Gaga wore an oversized Marc Jacobs suit to the “Women In Hollywood” event, telling reporters that the suit had a deeper, feminist meaning for her. “In this suit, I felt like me today.” #PowerSuit

On Tuesday, fresh off the heels of announcing her pregnancy, Meghan Markle stepped out in Dubbo, Australia alongside Harry on their Down Under tour, wearing an oversized blazer from her close friend Serena Williams’ collection.

Also on Tuesday, anyone who might have believed that there was trouble in paradise for Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin were proved wrong when the newlyweds stepped out for a PDA-packed breakfast in Hollywood. Baldwin’s look of choice for her early morning date? A checked blazer jacket with matching mini skirt from Italian brand Attico.

Tilda Swinton got on board with the trend this week, too, making a statement at the London premiere of Suspiria in an oversized, double-breasted Margiela suit.

Here’s more inspo: Tracee Ellis Ross at the American Music Award’s earlier this month in a Pyer Moss suit. Ross notably chose black designers for her head-to-toe look for the event.

Oh, wait–there’s more: Juliette Lewis in Haider Ackermann also at the “Women In Hollywood” event:

And so on…

While the idea of a woman wearing a suit is anything but new, we are absolutely LOVING this oversized iteration that is literally popping off for fall 2018 right now. You can’t deny that it’s going to be everywhere–especially for red carpet season. Will stars choose this look for major awards shows like the Oscar’s or Golden Globes? We think so!

And of course, you and I can certainly replicate the look at home. Break it apart by rocking just the blazer or trouser pants for work. We love the double-breasted styles as well as the retro gray checked ones. Style them over a white tee and relaxed jeans, or with lingerie underneath for a nighttime look. You can’t go wrong!
