The holidays are all about gift-giving, and when we’re stuck for ideas, celebrity inspiration often comes to the rescue. While some star-approved picks are surprisingly practical, others can feel a bit out of reach for the average shopper.
Blake Lively falls into the latter camp. During a conversation with Vogue about holiday gifting for friends and family, the actress raised eyebrows when she revealed that she likes to give her friends mahjong sets—an unexpectedly lavish and pricey present.
Blake Lively Gifts $400 Mahjong Sets to Friends
Discussing her tradition of gifting friends Mahjong sets from Oh My Mahjong, she shared, “I have been teaching friends how to play Mahjong, though I need to say I’m not a certified teacher. But I know enough to teach my friends how to play with me, and in the end, I always end up gifting them my own set because they are obsessed and want to practice.”
On the Oh My Mahjong website, the tiles range from $400, starter kits are priced at $640, and simple playing cards cost $80.
Reddit users shared their thoughts on her lavish gift recommendation in a viral thread.
“Anyone thinking of getting a $400 mahjong set, just don’t waste your money. You can get them for $50 (which is still expensive imo). I think I got a nice set back in the day for that price,” said one user. Another wrote, “She likely didn’t pay a dime. They were at the same event a few days ago. Oh My Mahjong must think Blake’s name is still worth something.” A third said, “Sounds like she's buying her friends to me.” A fourth wrote, “I swear these Hollywood brats always try to sound so profound and end up sounding stupid and out of touch.”

Blake Lively on Ryan Reynolds' Christmas Gift and Date Night Style
Elsewhere in the interview, Blake shed light on what she got Ryan and her parenting quirks.
“I’m not going to say what I got Ryan, but I really nailed it. I actually thought of it last year, but I didn’t have enough time to get it done. But I made it in time for this year,” she explained.
While she’s still working on checking off items from her Christmas list, she did give us an insight into how she might style her iconic hair for date night before the year comes to a close.
Using Blake Brown products, she revealed, “I only wear my hair up when I’m cooking or parenting. I tend to be drawn to things that are really classic and timeless. I like a nice, pretty, deep wave. My trick is to blow-dry my hair and wrap it into a tight ballerina bun and spray it with a ton of hairspray. When I take it out, instant waves.”
