If anyone has seen her fair share of makeup mistakes, it’s professional Makeup Artist Erica Taylor. As Taylor explains, she has been creating makeup magic on others for more than 20 years, and the same makeup mistakes seem to pop up at all times when she’s observing how women do their makeup. Unfortunately, you may have been making all of these mistakes for decades, but they may only start to look off after the age of 40 or 50. When our skin undergoes changes, some of the errors you may have brushed off in the past can become more obvious.

But there’s good news: these mistakes aren’t difficult to correct. You won’t need new products or to spend another scent. You’ll just need a bit of guidance on how to turn your mistake into a win (same product, slightly different application technique). Here are four makeup mistakes that Taylor says can “age the face” — number two can even make your face look “tired.” Avoiding these is a breeze.

1. Eyebrows That Aren’t Properly Filled In

Even if you own an eyebrow pencil or powder, you may not be filling in your brows in a way that truly enhances your eye shape. Many women make the mistake of taking their eyebrow product and using it to darken brows, without paying attention to sparse areas around the tail and beginning of the brow that need filling in. When your brow appears shortened, this can also visually shorten your eye shape. To elongate the eye, create fine, hair-like flicks with your brow product around the tail and start of the brow.

2. Thick Black Eyeliner

Many of us have been tricked into thinking that the more eyeliner we wear, the more defined our eyes will appear. But thick black eyeliner placed along the upper eyelash line can drag the lid downward, making the entire eye look heavier and more tired. If you also apply that black liner to your lower waterline, you risk making the eyes look even more closed. A better solution is to use liner sparingly — a thin line along the upper lash line that ends with an upward flick will create the illusion of an upturned, more awake eye.

3. Low Blush Placement

Contouring your cheeks with blush can be tricky. If you place your blush too low — say, beneath the cheekbone in an effort to accentuate them — the effect can drag your face downward and make you look tired. Bring that blush up higher so that it is positioned on the upper part of your cheekbone instead. This gives your face an automatic radiant lift.

4. Lining the Lips All Around

Lip liner is a secret makeup weapon we love for boosting the outline of your lips and making them appear fuller. We can’t be blamed for going overboard at times, though — it’s so common to take the liner and use it to fill in the entire lip area, including the corners of our lips. But Taylor explains that this application technique can actually backfire and make the lips look older and more droopy. To avoid this, use lip liner in the cupid’s bow and along the center of your bottom lip line and then apply a lighter lipstick or gloss on top. This creates a pouty, youthful look.
