Fake eyelashes have become a beauty staple for many, but according to Dr. Daniel Pompa, they may be doing far more harm than good. In a recent video, he urged women—especially young girls—to think twice before reaching for lash extensions or strip lashes, citing serious health risks linked to the adhesives used.
The biggest concern? The glue. Most lash adhesives contain formaldehyde, a known irritant and potential allergen. “The formaldehyde in the glue is causing all kinds of eye problems,” Dr. Pompa explained, noting that countless complaints can be found online from women experiencing side effects.

Long-Term Damage to Natural Lashes
Reported reactions include:
- Allergic responses like redness, itching, and swelling
- Damage to the natural lashes, including thinning and permanent loss
- In severe cases, even vision impairment or blindness
Beyond allergic reactions, repeated use of extensions or glued lashes can weaken hair follicles around the eyes. Over time, this leads to thinning or permanent loss of natural eyelashes—something no amount of mascara can fix.
In addition, chronic irritation of the eyelids can leave the delicate skin around the eyes inflamed and more prone to infections. Doctors warn that once follicles are permanently damaged, regrowth is unlikely, leaving users dependent on artificial lashes to maintain the look they once had naturally.
Dr. Pompa's Honest Opinion
Dr. Pompa didn’t hold back his personal feelings either, admitting that, as a man, he doesn’t find fake eyelashes attractive. But more importantly, he stressed that “it’s unhealthy for the eyes,” linking them to long-term conditions caused by toxicity and irritation.
While fake eyelashes may offer an instant glamour boost, experts warn they come at a cost. Between potential allergic reactions, permanent lash damage, and even the rare risk of blindness, it’s worth reconsidering whether that extra volume is really worth it.
Dr. Pompa’s advice is clear: question the toxicity and dangers before you glue anything near your eyes.
Instead, experts recommend safer alternatives, such as conditioning serums to strengthen natural lashes, mascara formulas designed for volume and length, or even magnetic lashes that avoid the use of harsh adhesives. Ultimately, enhancing your lashes shouldn’t come at the expense of your eye health.
