During one of the most popular cooking seasons of the year, a major ingredient is being recalled due to a very serious reason.

More than a dozen people have been hospitalized following the recall of eggs in California due to a Salmonella risk. The distributor, Vega Farms, along with the California Department of Public Health, is warning shoppers against 1,500 dozen eggs. Although the outbreak seems to be happening solely in California, it’s still a surprising case, as more than 60 people have reported illness. Read more about the situation below.

63 California Residents Reported Illnesses As Vega Farms Recalls Eggs Due To Salmonella

Egg buyers in California are being warned after Vega Farms Inc. recalled more than 1,500 dozen of its eggs earlier this month due to potential "Salmonella contamination." The California Department of Public Health has noted that affected eggs were sold to restaurants and stocked in grocery stores as well as farmers' markets in Northern California.

The recall began on December 5th, and since then, 63 people have reported themselves as ill, presenting symptoms aligned with Salmonella contamination, and 13 people have been hospitalized.

The products included in the recall include the Vega Farms' brown eggs, with sell-by dates of 12-22-25 and prior. The products found in grocery stores or markets are 1-dozen cartons and 30-egg flats, while the food-service products were 15-dozen cases.

What To Look Out For

The recall has been in effect since the start of the month; therefore, shoppers should be less at risk than they were when it started. However, those buying or consuming eggs in California should be careful, avoiding the eggs described above.

As eggs are being pulled from shelves, shoppers in the state can keep an eye out for any stores or vendors selling the recalled eggs, and are urged to contact the California Department of Public Health if they see them.

Additionally, if you've consumed eggs and experience any Salmonella-related symptoms, like stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting, that persist or get worse within a few days, it's crucial to contact your doctor for treatment.
