Now that we’re officially in a new year, it’s a good time to expand your horizons and try out some new foods, especially ones that can help you stay healthy.

Fermented foods have long been known for their added benefits, as the fermentation process introduces healthy probiotics, and they can help benefit other bodily functions. However, not everyone is accustomed to fermented foods, aside from certain brands of pickles. We spoke with a registered dietitian about three fermented foods you can add to your diet for slimming down that you might not’ve tried before. Read more about them below.

1. Kefir

If you've never heard of kefir, it's a dairy product that is commonly eaten in Eastern Europe and is often described as a thinner yogurt. If you're looking to switch up some of the dairy items in your fridge and are looking to not only lose a few pounds but also get in some more probiotics, then it might be worth a try.

"Kefir is a drinkable fermented dairy product that contains more probiotic strains than traditional yogurt, which can help support a healthier gut," explains registered dietitian Kelly Springer, MS, RD, CDN. "When gut bacteria are in balance, it may be easier to manage cravings, blood sugar fluctuations, and overall appetite. These factors all help contribute to sustainable weight loss. Kefir also contains protein, which helps you feel fuller longer and more satisfied between meals."

2. Tempeh

Unless you're a vegan or vegetarian, or have eaten at plant-based establishments, there's a good chance you haven't gotten to try tempeh, which is made from fermented soybeans. Although it might be a big change for meat eaters, it is high in protein as well as extra nutritional benefits.

"Tempeh is a fermented soy food that's high in both protein and fiber, making it especially satiating and supportive for weight loss," says Springer. "The fermentation process helps make nutrients easier to absorb while supporting gut health. Because tempeh is so satisfying, it can help reduce overeating and mindless snacking, helping to keep meals more balanced overall. A great protein choice for vegan and vegetarian diets!"

3. Sauerkraut

This is an example of a tangy, crunchy food that is much more popular, but not everyone realizes it's fermented, nor just how nutritious it is. Made from shredded cabbage, sauerkraut can go on a lot more than hot dogs, and can be a wonderful addition to some of your daily savory meals.

"Raw and unpasteurized sauerkraut provides probiotics along with fiber-rich vegetables such as cabbage, which support digestion and fullness," notes Springer. "A healthier gut microbiome may help regulate metabolism and how the body stores fat over time. Since these foods are low in calories but high in flavor, they're an easy way to add satisfaction to meals without adding excess calories."
