Achieving a flat stomach is a fitness goal for many, but it’s not just about exercising regularly. Your diet can play a crucial role in shaping your abdominal region. While high-calorie foods can be delicious and satisfying, some of them are like hidden time bombs when it comes to your waistline and should be avoided if you want to shed that stubborn belly fat.

We spoke with Dr. Mo Janson, MD and general practitioner, to learn about the one type of food we should limit as much as possible because they are pretty much ‘calorie bombs.’ Janson revealed that sugary beverages are one of the primary culprits when it comes to disrupting your quest for a flat stomach.

Sugary Beverages

Sugary beverages, such as sodas, fruit juices, and energy drinks, are one of the culprits that can stand in the way of achieving a flat stomach. These drinks are often loaded with empty calories from added sugars, which can contribute to weight gain and the accumulation of belly fat. Consuming excess sugar can lead to insulin spikes and increased fat storage in the abdominal area.

"Excessive sugar consumption, particularly fructose found in high-fructose corn syrup, has been linked to an increase in visceral fat, which is the fat that accumulates around the abdominal organs. This type of fat is associated with various health risks, including metabolic syndrome and heart disease," Janson notes.

He also adds that the fizziness in carbonated sodas can lead to bloating and gas, creating the illusion of a larger stomach. Furthermore, the surplus sodium content in certain drinks can result in temporary water retention.

The Bottom Line

Overall, Janson states that in order "to achieve a flatter stomach and improve overall health, it's advisable to limit or eliminate sugary beverages from your diet. Opt for healthier alternatives like water, herbal tea, or unsweetened beverages."

It's also a good idea to consider cutting down on added sugars in your diet and prioritize a balanced, whole-foods-based eating regimen.
