There are so many things we should take into consideration when we’re choosing what we eat on a daily basis. However, we bet you weren’t thinking about the parasites that could be in your food.

Dr. Robert W.B. Love, a viral neuroscientist who makes helpful videos on the best ways to take care of your brain and reduce your risk of degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, made a video about three foods you should “avoid,” as they can “contain parasites that can cross into your brain.” These foods are surprisingly common, and while you may not need to cut them out completely, it’s a good idea to consider scaling back or ensuring you’re getting the highest quality versions of these foods when possible. Read more about them below.

1. Pork

Dr. Love apologizes in advance to anyone who may be a big barbecue lover. As it turns out, pork is a form of red meat that could potentially contain harmful parasites. Pork is used in so many foods we eat, from bacon or sausage in the morning, to ground pork in various lunch and dinner recipes, as well as sliced ham, pork chops, etc.

"Pork is one of the most likely sources of animal protein that can contain parasites," says Dr. Love. "So, if you're going to eat pork, you want to know the farmer, or you really want to cook it really well. I just avoid pork completely."

2. Farm-Raised Salmon

The neuroscientist explains that this is one of those foods and proteins that many people think is healthy for them, and while salmon is famous for being nutritious, full of healthy fats, and more, farm-raised versions can be dangerous.

"Unlike wild-caught salmon, which is actually super duper healthy for you [and] great for your brain, farm-raised salmon are raised in these small, small ponds and they can contain parasites," Dr. Love explains. "So, I don't recommend doing farm-raised salmon. Instead, get wild-caught salmon."

3. Sushi

This is the food that Dr. Love predicted would "upset" a lot of people, as it's so popular. Sushi can be delicious and provide a balanced meal for those who want to treat themselves to some tasty rolls. However, when it's not prepared properly or made with the best ingredients, it can potentially be harmful to your body and brain.

"Research shows that those who eat sushi multiple times a week, about 30% of them have some sort of parasite," he says. "Once parasites are in your body, they can cross into your brain." Yikes!

Which of these three potentially dangerous foods surprised you the most?
