Taking care of your hair can be a challenge with many popular shampoos containing harmful ingredients.
These ingredients can lead to more brittle and breakable hair, and some of them can even lead to more serious health problems. With that in mind, depending on what shampoo you choose, you could be doing more harm than good.
Parabens
One ingredient to look out for is parabens, which are well-known for having potentially dangerous impacts.
According to Nutrafol, "They are used as a preservative to prevent bacteria from growing in cosmetics and shampoos. Parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen and have been linked to increased growth of breast cancer cells."

With that in mind, it's best to avoid parabens as much as you can.
Naturopathic doctor, Dr. Trevor Cates, tells the Independent, "To identify parabens on skin care labels, look for propylparaben, benzylparaben, methyl- paraben, or butylparaben."

Diethanolamine and Triethanolamine
Diethanolamine (DEA) and Triethanolamine (TEA) are two other ingredients you should do your best to avoid.
Nutrafol explains, "In 1998, researchers found a link between the topical application of DEA and cancer in animals, but the effects on humans are unclear. The European Commission has banned DEA in cosmetics."

Keeping that in mind, avoiding these harmful ingredients is a good way to be more conscientious about taking care of your body. So next time you hit the shampoo aisle, be sure to check the bottle's ingredients list before making a choice.
