Winter weather can wreak havoc on your skin. Cold winds, low humidity, and indoor heating strip moisture, leaving your complexion dry, tight, and irritated. To keep your skin healthy and protected this season, it’s crucial to know which ingredients to avoid. Hannah Rodriguez, PA-C in Dermatology, shares her top winter skincare warnings.

1. Harsh Surfactants

Many cleansers contain sulfates like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), which create that satisfying foamy lather. But Rodriguez warns that these ingredients “strip your skin’s natural oils—the very protection you NEED when it’s cold and dry outside.”

Instead, she recommends switching to gentler cleansers with creamier textures. These help remove dirt and impurities without compromising your skin’s moisture barrier, keeping your face soft and hydrated even in freezing temperatures.

2. Fragrance and Essential Oils

While scented skincare may smell delightful, it can be a major winter skincare hazard. Rodriguez emphasizes that “winter air compromises your skin barrier, making it more reactive. Fragrance is the #1 cause of contact dermatitis. Your skin doesn’t need to smell like a cupcake to be healthy."

Fragrance and essential oils can trigger irritation, redness, and itchy rashes, particularly when your barrier is already stressed by cold air. Stick to fragrance-free or minimal-ingredient formulas to protect your skin and reduce the risk of winter flare-ups.

3. High-Strength Exfoliants

Exfoliation is important for maintaining smooth, radiant skin, but winter is not the time to overdo it. Rodriguez advises dialing back AHAs, BHAs, and other high-strength exfoliants. “Your skin is already stressed from cold winds and indoor heating. Over-exfoliating = damaged barrier = more dryness,” she explains.

Gentle exfoliation, just once or twice a week, can help remove dead skin without stripping moisture. Pair it with a nourishing moisturizer to restore your skin barrier and maintain hydration.

The bottom line

Cold weather calls for a softer, gentler approach to skincare. Avoid harsh sulfates, scented products, and over-exfoliation to protect your skin’s natural barrier. By choosing nourishing, fragrance-free formulas and dialing back aggressive treatments, you can keep your skin hydrated, calm, and glowing all winter long.
