Winter can be brutal on your skin. Cold winds, dry indoor heating, and fluctuating temperatures strip moisture, leaving your complexion feeling tight, irritated, and flaky. While adjusting your skincare routine for the season is essential, dermatologists say that two surprisingly common mistakes are behind a lot of winter skin woes: washing your face with hot water and using overly harsh cleansers.

1. Washing With Hot Water

It may feel soothing to splash hot water on your face during chilly mornings, but your skin is silently paying the price. “Ideally, lukewarm water should be used to wash your face and your skin. Water that is too hot will actually draw moisture out of your skin, leaving it drier and more irritated,” warns double board-certified dermatologist Angela Casey, MD.

Hot water strips away the skin’s natural oils, which form a protective barrier against dryness and environmental stressors. Without this barrier, your skin is more prone to sensitivity, redness, and even flare-ups of conditions like eczema and rosacea. Over time, repeated exposure to hot water can accelerate water loss from the skin, leaving it dehydrated and tight, making moisturizers less effective.

Experts recommend adjusting your daily routine: keep your showers and face washes lukewarm, and limit prolonged exposure to water. For those who love steaming their face, consider using a warm, gentle mist rather than a hot, direct stream. Not only will this prevent moisture loss, but it will also protect your skin from irritation that can worsen with age.

2. Using Harsh Cleansers

Cleansers are meant to remove dirt, oil, and makeup—but some ingredients go too far, stripping the skin of essential oils.

“Some face cleansers contain active ingredients that are more likely to strip away the skin's natural oil,” notes Dr. Daniel Boyer of the Farr Institute.

“The ingredients that are known to cause skin problems include benzoyl peroxides and salicylic acids, and may result in itchiness on your skin and also leave your skin tight.” These ingredients, commonly found in acne treatments and deep-cleansing products, can be particularly damaging during the winter months when the skin’s barrier is already compromised.

Frequent use can lead to flaking, irritation, and a cycle of dryness that’s hard to break. Even for those without sensitive skin, harsh cleansers can trigger micro-inflammation, making the complexion appear dull and uneven. Instead, opt for gentle, sulfate-free cleansers with hydrating components like glycerin or hyaluronic acid.

These formulations effectively remove impurities without stripping natural oils, leaving skin soft, supple, and ready to absorb moisturizers and serums. For makeup removal, consider using a micellar water or cream-based cleanser before following up with a mild daily wash.

The Bottom Line

Dry, flaky skin is not just a side effect of cold weather—it can also be caused by how you care for your skin. Avoiding hot water and harsh cleansers can make a huge difference, keeping your skin hydrated, comfortable, and healthy throughout the season. Protecting your skin’s natural barrier is the key to maintaining moisture and preventing irritation, especially in the winter months.
