If your skin isn’t snapping back into place like it used to, you may be dealing with something called skin elastosis—a clinical term for sagging, loose, or crinkly skin. According to licensed esthetician and skincare expert Chris Gibson, there are effective ways to address this issue and help your skin regain its youthful elasticity and firmness.

“Whether it’s due to aging, sudden weight loss, or sun damage—also known as solar elastosis—there are several things you can do to help your skin bounce back,” Gibson says.

1. Collagen Peptides (With Vitamin C)

Topping Gibson’s list is a well-rounded approach to collagen supplementation. “This has moved up to the top of my list as an in-home, non-invasive treatment,” he explains. Collagen peptides, when paired with vitamin C, can significantly improve hydration, firmness, and elasticity. “It took about eight weeks for me to see results, but now it’s part of my daily routine,” he says. Gibson recommends hydrolyzed collagen peptides, noting that they’re safe, effective, and naturally used by the body to rebuild skin cells, cartilage, and—of course—collagen.

2. Dark Chocolate

Yes, you read that right—dark chocolate could actually be good for your skin. “Studies continue to show that daily intake of cocoa flavonols helps improve skin elasticity and firmness, and plumps out fine lines and wrinkles,” says Gibson. Just make sure you’re choosing high-quality dark chocolate with around 320mg of cocoa flavonols for best results.

3. Retinol and Retinoids

No anti-aging routine is complete without the vitamin A powerhouse: retinol. “There’s just no other topical ingredient that can do what retinol and prescription retinoids do,” Gibson stresses. They speed up cellular turnover, repair DNA-damaged skin cells, and stimulate collagen production. He encourages users to consult with a board-certified dermatologist to determine the best retinoid strength for their skin, especially when considering tretinoin.

4. Genistein (Soy Isoflavones)

Derived from soybeans, genistein is a plant-based compound that mimics the effects of estrogen—without altering hormone levels. “It’s been shown to help improve elasticity and firmness in skin and is currently available as an oral supplement,” Gibson notes. Researchers are also exploring topical formulations, suggesting even greater potential for future skincare products.

5. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

For some women, HRT can be beneficial during and after menopause to combat bone loss and subcutaneous fat depletion—both of which affect the skin’s structure. “Recent studies are exploring how HRT helps preserve skin tissue,” Gibson says. However, he cautions that it’s not for everyone. “It’s crucial to consult with your doctor to determine if this therapy is right for you.”

6. Microneedling

Also known as dermarolling, microneedling involves rolling hundreds of tiny needles over the skin’s surface to trigger healing. “This technique thickens skin and can lift fine lines, wrinkles, and even stretch marks,” Gibson explains. He’s used it himself for over seven months and recommends using needle lengths of 0.5mm or less for at-home treatments. Longer needles should only be used by certified professionals to avoid risks like hyperpigmentation or infection.

7. Laser, RF, and Ultrasound Therapies

Technologies like radio frequency (RF), ultrasound (Ultherapy), and laser treatments offer non-invasive ways to stimulate collagen and improve skin firmness. “These therapies heat the deeper layers of your skin to trigger repair, tighten tissue, and enhance bounce,” Gibson says. While some treatments may cause temporary soreness, especially ultrasound, they’re particularly effective for sagging caused by fat or bone loss. Always see a trained professional to ensure proper results and safety.

Final Thoughts

As Gibson points out, lifestyle factors like sun exposure and smoking can accelerate skin aging, so prevention is key. “Always apply sunscreen, be mindful of your habits, and treat your skin well from the inside out,” he says.
