When it comes to healthy hair, there’s one question dermatologists hear over and over again: How often should you wash your hair? While some people swear by daily shampooing and others stretch wash days for a week or more, experts say there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer.

According to Dr. Sanober, a double board-certified dermatologist, the ideal hair-washing schedule depends on your hair type, scalp, and lifestyle.

Most People Should Aim For Two To Three Washes Per Week

For the average person, washing your hair two to three times a week strikes the right balance between keeping the scalp clean and preserving its natural oils.

"Two to three times a week is ideal for most people," Dr. Sanober explains.

This schedule helps remove excess oil, sweat, and product buildup without stripping the hair of the moisture it needs to stay healthy and shiny.

If You Wash Every Day, Make One Simple Change

Some people—especially those with oily scalps, frequent workouts, or fine hair—prefer to shampoo daily. If that's you, Dr. Sanober recommends being gentler with your routine.

"Daily washers can try alternating with a mild shampoo," she says. Using a gentle formula can help minimize dryness while still keeping the scalp feeling fresh.

Long Hair Can Often Go Longer Between Washes

If you have long hair, you may not need to shampoo as frequently. Because natural scalp oils take longer to travel down the hair shaft, longer hair often stays looking clean for several days.

"Those with long hair, once a week is totally fine, too," Dr. Sanober notes. Of course, if your scalp becomes itchy, greasy, or develops noticeable buildup sooner, washing more often may be necessary.

It Really Depends On Your Hair

Ultimately, Dr. Sanober says there isn't a universal schedule that works for everyone.

"As I said before... it depends," she explains. Factors like your scalp's oil production, hair texture, styling habits, exercise routine, and climate all influence how often your hair actually needs to be washed.

The Bottom Line

Rather than following viral hair-washing trends, dermatologists recommend paying attention to your own scalp.

If your hair feels clean, your scalp is comfortable, and your strands aren't becoming excessively dry or oily, you've likely found the right routine. For most people, that means washing about two to three times a week—but your perfect schedule may look a little different.
