If you own a smartphone, then you likely know just how important it is to protect your data and make sure you’re not allowing apps or people to have your valuable information.

Since there are so many apps out there, it’s a good idea to focus on which ones will keep you the safest, and that means deleting or denying permissions to the ones that end up taking up the most data. We’re listing two iPhone apps that are collecting more of your data than you may realize. Read more about them below.

1. Instagram

Instagram is one of today's most popular and commonly used social media apps, as it's a platform where people can share all sorts of content, not just pictures anymore. However, because the app has so many features, it's also collecting a lot of data in the background.

"They track your behavior all over the internet and share your data within Meta," explains tech expert Fergal Glynn. "Both Facebook and Instagram collect information across 32 data points and use seven specifically for tracking you, including your name, address, and phone number."

2. TikTok

TikTok is another app that many smartphone users today can't see themselves living without. It's jam-packed with content and takes up a lot of people's time when they need some solid entertainment. Although the app seems fairly straightforward, tech experts have been warning users to be cautious due to how much data and information the app collects.

"TikTok has a huge collection of data; they gather biometric information and precise location tracking," says Glynn. "They don't properly explain what they do with your sensitive data, especially the young users."

"All these platforms collect your data so that they can monetize your personal information through advertising systems that track you across the internet," he adds. "Your data becomes a product rather than something that you control."
