There’s nothing more frustrating than watching your iPhone battery drain faster than you can charge it, especially when you rely on your phone for everything from work and navigation to reaching out to friends. Whether you’re constantly running around looking for a charger or are anxiously monitoring your battery percentage throughout the day, a battery that won’t hold up can quickly become headache fast. Having a phone that keeps up with your routine isn’t just convenient, but also essential.

You’re not powerless when it comes to battery life. According to tech experts, there are a few simple yet effective steps you can take to dramatically extend your iPhone’s battery throughout the day.

These aren’t complicated hacks, either—they’re proven tips that can help reduce battery drain and make sure your phone works when you need it most. Here are four smart strategies to keep in mind.

1. Location Services

Location Services can quietly quickly your battery by allowing apps to constantly track your whereabouts, even when you’re not using them. While it’s helpful for things like maps and weather, many apps request access unnecessarily, causing extra battery strain. To improve battery health, limit which apps can use your location and how often.

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Switch apps that don’t need constant tracking to “While Using the App” or “Never."

2. Background App Refresh

Background App Refresh lets apps update content in the background so they’re ready when you open them—but this constant activity uses power and can significantly drain your battery over time. To preserve battery life, it’s best to limit or completely disable this feature.

Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh, then tap Background App Refresh at the top and choose Off to disable it entirely, or Wi-Fi to limit it to times you're connected to Wi-Fi.

3. Visual Effects

Apple’s sleek animations and effects—like motion transitions and transparency—may look nice, but they use extra graphics processing power, which can wear down your battery more quickly. Disabling these visual effects reduces that load and helps your phone run more efficiently.

To turn them off, go to Settings > Accessibility > Motion, then toggle on Reduce Motion.

4. Widgets

Widgets on your Home Screen might seem harmless, but they often refresh content in real-time, which keeps them active and drains your battery in the background. Disabling unnecessary widgets helps reduce this ongoing activity.

To remove them, swipe right on the Home Screen to open the Today View, then scroll to the bottom and tap Edit. Tap the minus icon next to any widget you don’t need and confirm by tapping Remove.
