Julia Roberts Says She And Danny Moder Were 'Stricter Parents' Than Most In Hollywood
The Lancôme ambassador is unsurprisingly no stranger to discipline, whether it's sticking to a tight filming schedule, navigating demanding press tours, or prepping for a role with intense diet and fitness routines. And when it comes to parenting, she says she and Moder took the same no-nonsense approach.
Speaking with longtime friend and Ticket to Paradise co-star George Clooney for her recent 72 Magazine cover story, the My Best Friend's Wedding alum reflected on her parenting style. She admitted she believes she and her husband were "stricter parents" than many of their Hollywood peers – and their three kids didn't have the privileged upbringing that outsiders might assume they did.
"When they were younger, certainly, Danny and I would have been considered some of the stricter parents. Not like we're laying down the law, but these are the rules and they don't change," the Notting Hill alum shared.
Julia Roberts Talks About Consistency And 'Stability'
Growing up in the public eye is one thing, but doing so in the digital age understandably adds a whole new challenge. Asked if she limited her kids' internet access when they were younger, the Erin Brockovich alum revealed: "I think they were, for sure, some of the last kids in their peer groups to get phones and stuff like that."
Roberts then explained just how consistent she and Moder were as parents, and why that consistency was important, saying: "Here's the boundary of your life and it does not shift. You know, you don't ask me and get an answer and then go ask dad and get a different answer. That doesn't happen. It will never happen."
She went on: "I think that is what creates the stability that then allows them to feel secure because you know there is this fixed world of love and safety that exists unconditionally."
Julia Roberts Says She And Husband Danny Moder Are 'Aligned' In Their 'Core Values'
The Mona Lisa Smile actress also opened up about the values she and her husband have tried to instill in their children, adding: "You know, we all want our kids to grow up with values. This is what we want as parents." She continued: "I think part of it is just Danny and I are definitely aligned in our core values and always have been."
And when reflecting on when her children finally realized she wasn't just their mom but was also one of the most famous actresses in the world, Roberts said: "And I think when kids are little, kids only know what you let them know. I can't even tell you how old my kids probably were when they really understood my place in a work world."
