Social media is having a field day with Donald Trump right now – from his appearance to his word choices to his facial expressions, everything seems to be under intense scrutiny and relentless mockery.

And the year got off to a strong start during a meeting on Friday, January 9th, involving Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and other officials, including representatives from Chevron and Exxon. The goal of the meeting was reportedly to convince the energy giants to invest billions into oil production in Venezuela.

Donald Trump Reads Confidential Note From Marco Rubio Out Loud

The moment that truly set social media ablaze came when Rubio, who was sitting next to Trump, quietly placed a small piece of paper in front of him while he was speaking. In a scene that many people on social media likened to something straight out of elementary school, the POTUS announced to the room: "Marco just gave me a note."

He then proceeded to read the note out loud – whether or not he was supposed to is unclear, but it didn't seem intentional based on Rubio's visibly shocked and uncomfortable facial expression! – revealing the message: "Go back to Chevron, they want to discuss something."

Trump immediately took Rubio's advice, saying: "Go ahead, I'm going back to Chevron. Thank you, Marco." He laughed and gave Rubio a pat on the back, seemingly attempting to diffuse the awkwardness, while Rubio still seemed to be taken aback and uncomfortable by what had happened.

A voice off camera asked: "Is there a question, Mr. President?" Trump then waved the note in the air and turned towards Rubio, adding: "Yes. Go ahead. Marco, what are you saying here?" Check out the full hilarious and awkward exchange here.

Social Media Reactions

Unsurprisingly, social media was beside itself with laughter, second-hand embarrassment, mockery, and more. "The way little Marco looked at him," hilariously observed one fan on Instagram, followed by the crying laughing emoji. "Yeah that part cracked me up," replied a second, adding: "He kinda had that shocked Pikachu face."

"Marco Rubio's face was everything," echoed a third, as a fourth concurred: "It's Marco's face for me." "Rubio's face," commented a fifth, followed by the skull emoji. The same fan added: "I live for that moment, watching over and over again."

"Marco was about to swing," joked a sixth, followed by the crying laughing emoji, as a seventh said: "When you tell your mom who your crush is and she announces it." An eighth quipped: "It's like when you text your friend at the function and they immediately ask out loud, 'why do you want to leave?'" A ninth shared a similar anecdote, adding: "Trump is like my husband... I'll be like 'Don't turn around...' he turns around and looks every single time."

"He's not there to hide secrets," declared a tenth, followed by four crying laughing emojis. "They need to start writing stage directions in big, bold letters on any script they give him," suggested an eleventh, as a twelfth added: "Worst. Wingman. EVER." "If anything happens to Trump, remember it was Marco," a thirteenth commented.
