George Clooney and wife Amal Clooney – along with their eight-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella – officially obtained French citizenship at the end of last year, after spending several years living on their property in the south of France.
While the news was welcomed by many of their fans, it also raised eyebrows due to France recently tightening its immigration requirements. As per the new rules, applicants must prove that their French is high enough for university study, and also pass a civic knowledge test. The 65-year-old Good Night and Good Luck actor has openly admitted his French still isn’t up to scratch, telling RTL radio in December: “I love the French culture, your language, even if I’m still bad at it after 400 days of courses.”

Donald Trump Slams George And Amal Clooney's French Citizenship On Truth Social
Trump, 79, reacted to the news in a post shared on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, December 31st, sarcastically calling the Clooneys' naturalization "good news" for the United States.
"Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France which is, sadly, in the midst of a major crime problem because of their absolutely horrendous handling of immigration, much like we had under Sleepy Joe Biden," Trump wrote.
He also took aim at Clooney's Hollywood career, adding: "Clooney got more publicity for politics than he did for his very few, and totally mediocre, movies." Trump went on to say the Wolfs actor was never a true movie star, calling him just an "average guy who complained, constantly, about common sense in politics." He signed off with: "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
George Clooney Fires Back At Donald Trump
The Jay Kelly actor didn't take Trump's comments lightly, and hit back with his own response. He told the Hollywood Reporter: "I totally agree with the current president. We have to make America great again. We'll start in November." His comment about November is of course in reference to the upcoming midterm elections.
This isn't the first time the Ticket to Paradise actor has addressed Trump's criticism. In April 2025, he responded to Trump calling him a "second-rate movie 'star' and failed political pundit" by telling CBS: "I don't care. I've known Donald Trump for a long time. My job is not to please the president of the United States. My job is to try to tell the truth when I can and when I have the opportunity."
He went on at the time: "I'm well aware of the idea that people will not like that. There will be people who criticize that. Elon Musk has weighed in every once in a while. That's their right to do it, and it's my right to say the other side."

Trump's comments sparked a wave of reactions online, with many users interestingly applauding his blunt response to Clooney's naturalization as a French citizen. "See ya George Clooney! Don't let the country hit you in the [expletive,]" quipped one person on X.
"Woohoo! What a huge win for America!" exclaimed a second. "Au revoir!" a third echoed, as a fourth simply said, "bye bye." "Good riddance," commented a fifth, as a sixth chimed in: "Hopefully they won't come back."
A seventh concurred: "Trump's not wrong." "Awesome post of Trump," thought an eighth. "Oh my God... I keep loving Trump," agreed a ninth, as a tenth concluded: "George Clowney gone now, what an attention seeking idiot he is."
Not everyone agreed though, with many others firing back in Clooney's defense. "Good on George!" exclaimed one fan, followed by the hand clapping emoji. "This orange idiot is an embarrassment to this country. We have a [expletive] toddler for a 'president,'" slammed a second X user.
"You could only wish you were the man George Clooney is," wrote a third, as a fourth added: "Trump feels spurned – poor thing." A fifth declared: "I'm getting bored of Trump's rants.
