As we age, the delicate skin under our eyes changes more noticeably than the rest of our face. Loss of fat and volume, reduced blood flow, and fine lines can leave the under-eye area looking hollow, tired, or lined. Veteran makeup artist Smitha Deepak, with over 20 years of experience, shares five “quick fixes” using concealer and a few smart techniques to make mature under-eyes look brighter, smoother, and more youthful.
1. Mix Concealer with Color Corrector
Instead of layering a color corrector under concealer—which can feel heavy or cakey as skin ages—Smitha recommends mixing a peach-toned corrector with a concealer that matches your face tone. Use a flat angled brush to dab and blend the mixture under your eyes. This method covers dark circles without looking ashy and prevents concealer from settling into fine lines.

2. Use Two Shades to Combat Hollows and Eye Bags
For under-eye hollows or bags, Smita suggests using two shades of concealer: one that matches your skin tone and another that’s slightly lighter. Apply the skin-tone shade first, then place the lighter one directly on the hollow. This technique brings forward recessed areas and creates a smoother, more lifted appearance without heavy layering.

3. Brighten Without Flashback
To brighten the under-eye area without causing an ashy effect, Smita recommends skipping overly light concealers. Instead, start with your matched concealer and then press a pink-toned setting powder underneath using a triangle sponge. This method sets the concealer while brightening the area, giving a fresh, awake look.

4. Remove Excess Product From Fine Lines
Fine lines are inevitable, but they don’t have to trap concealer. After applying concealer, squint your eyes to reveal where the product may settle. Use a small Q-tip to gently remove excess from lines, then lightly blend the residue back in with a brush. Finish with a thin layer of translucent powder to prevent creasing while keeping the area smooth.

5. Quick Fix for Fine Lines Only
If you don’t have significant dark circles but want a fast under-eye touch-up, try a nude eye pencil. Apply it directly under the eyes, avoiding fine lines, and blend with your finger. The thicker, drier formula sets naturally without powder and gives enough coverage for a quick outing, making it ideal for days when you’re short on time.
With these five expert hacks, mature under-eyes can look brighter, smoother, and more youthful without heavy layers or complicated routines. Whether you’re covering dark circles, eye bags, or fine lines, these tips from Smitha Deepak show that a few strategic tweaks can make a big difference in minutes.
