5 Medium-Length Hairstyles You Should Never Wear Over 40, A Stylist Warns—Here’s What You Should Try Instead

If you ask stylists which haircuts and hairstyles they wouldn’t recommend to women over 40, you’ll likely hear a number of them overlap. As always, if your favorite hairstyle also happens to be one that isn’t recommended over a certain age, feel free to ignore this advice. You know what’s best for you and which haircut makes you look and feel your personal best. But sometimes something feels off about your hair — and you can’t even put your finger on it. It could be too many layers or not enough layering, a cut that makes your face look more severe or square, or one that doesn’t do enough to bring out your facial features and bone structure.

If your hair isn’t your best hair yet, there’s room for improvement. And one of these five medium haircuts and styles, which are routinely on stylists’ lists of worst choices for women over 40, may not be doing your hair justice.

1. Overly Layered

An overly layered medium haircut is one in which you see layering, but it all seems a bit disjointed. It may feel like one layer doesn’t lend itself to the next, and that the ends are choppy, which can make thin or fine hair look even less dense. The idea behind layering hair is to give it shape and movement and to create the look of more volume. But it’s important to achieve balance with layering so that there aren’t so many layers that your hair lacks a true shape. Consider blunt ends and lighter long layers that won’t overwhelm your cut.

2. One Length and Stick-Straight

One length hair that is long and stick-straight will always make your hair look flatter than hair that is medium cut or shorter and that features some layering or texture. This may look great if your hair has some density to it, but if you consider your hair fine or thin, this isn’t the best look.

3. Baby Bangs

Baby bangs are rarely a good idea at any age, though they can look trendy with the right haircut. But if you have medium hair, it can be more difficult to pull off super-short bangs. They may make your face appear more severe, as well. Opting for longer, softer fringe with texture can highlight your facial features instead.

4. Blunt Bangs

Longer blunt bangs that are square in shape can also add to the severity of a face and make it look more square. The simple solution is to ask your stylist to cut into the bangs a bit so that they have texture and movement.

5. Center Parts

A center part always showcases areas of sparseness on the scalp, which may be an issue if you’re experiencing hair thinning and shedding. Luckily, one of the trendiest hairstyles this year is the side part — so it’s the perfect time to experiment with a change in how you normally wear your hair.
