Recently, a few viral social media posts related to Meta and AI had the internet reeling, and while the tech empire is doing its best to clear up any misinformation, many users are remaining skeptical.

Internet users have been buzzing ever since learning that the messages they choose to exchange with Meta’s AI chatbot will be analyzed and used to personalize advertisements and recommendations across its apps and services. The topic and viral social media posts from tech influencers caused some users to enter a panic, worried that this is one example of AI being taken too far and potentially invading privacy. Read more about the situation below.

Meta Announces A Change That Will Personalize Content Based On Interactions With Their AI Chatbots

It's no secret that artificial intelligence is becoming a more consistent part of our daily lives and interactions, and it's quite a buzzing topic, as many are debating whether or not we're taking things too far or becoming too reliant on it.

One of the ways AI has become integrated with our lives is through social media, and more recently, Meta made an announcement about one of the new ways they'd start using AI technology to "personalize" user experiences.

"We're also using Meta AI, and our other AI features, to improve your experience on all of our platforms," the company wrote in a recent press release. "We will soon use your interactions with AI at Meta to personalize the content and ads you see, including things like posts and reels. We'll start notifying people about this update next week via notifications and emails, several weeks before it goes into effect on December 16, 2025."

Internet Users React To Meta's Announcement On Social Media

Once the statement about Meta's AI chatbots and the way they'll be used to collect data on people's user experiences, numerous Meta users began to panic, instantly assuming their private messages would be read by AI technology. While the company has been working hard to clear up any rumors that private messages exchanged between two users would not be 'read,' many are still skeptical of the AI-related announcement.

"This should be illegal," commented an Instagram user.

"I'll just delete my accounts and opt out forever," wrote another.

Although Meta is insisting that the information exchanged with its chatbots will only be used to "tailor the ads and content you see based on your activity, ensuring that your experience evolves as your interests change," people still appear to be unsettled by the idea.

"Just use these platforms for a little bit of boredom scrolling here and there, keep all your messages light," suggested an Instagram user. "Never send anything in writing you wouldn't want read by a stranger. Connect with your friends in reality."
