Michelle Obama On Being The First Black First Lady

In the interview, Roberts prompted Michelle by calling on a quote she included in The Look: "You said you were all too aware that as the first Black couple, we couldn't afford any missteps. And you also say as a Black woman, I was under a particularly white hot glare. Did you feel that?" Roberts asked.

Michelle replied, "For sure. You can't afford to get anything wrong because you didn't—at least until he country came to know us—we didn't get the grace that I think some other families have gotten." While the Obamas did become a sort of national treasure following Barack's eight years in office, it wasn't always this way.

Social Media Reactions

And in fact, some online trolls still aren't welcoming of the Obamas. Many users reacted with hate towards Michelle's interview, leaving comments on X, formerly Twitter, like, "Starting to feel like Michelle Obama is a bitter malcontent addicted to complaining about her incredibly privileged life."

"She never stops whining!" another user commented.

"This woman is a professional complainer," added a third.

"The eternal victim," agreed a fourth.

Others were more supportive of Michelle, leaving comments like, "So glad she is finally sharing her story!" and "I can't wait to read more in her new book!"
