Have you ever sat down to watch a show on your go-to streaming service only to find out it was discontinued? Well, there’s a good chance that’s going to happen to more Netflix viewers after several show cancellations and discontinuations were announced, causing upset among subscribers.

In recent weeks, the popular streaming service and production studios have announced that five fan-favorite shows, including Heartstopper and Big Mouth, would not be renewed for new seasons or canceled. The news has caused many fans to express their disappointment online, writing that they’re considering getting rid of their Netflix subscriptions, especially given that the price has risen over the years. Read more about which shows are going away below.

Five Popular Netflix Shows Have Been Canceled Or Announced Final Seasons

Netflix subscribers around the country are having a hard time grappling with the cancellation of several popular series, from dramas to animated comedies. If you haven’t been keeping up with the streaming service’s latest updates, here is what you need to know about the series that have reached the end of their lifespan.

1. Mindhunter

The crime thriller starring Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany first aired in 2017 and is based on a 1995 novel. A fanbase for the series grew as it aired two seasons, but recently, its producer, David Fincher, stated that the show would not be renewing for a third season, which ended up deeply upsetting them.

According to Hypebeast, in an interview, Fincher stated that the show was a "very expensive" series and that representatives from Netflix ultimately ended up "respectfully" letting the creative and production team know that it could no longer go on unless they were able to "reduce the budget," which was not in their plans.

When the news broke about the discontinuation of the crime series, fans took to Reddit to express their disappointment.

"How was this show canceled?" asked a fan. "I'm too hooked, and I need more!"

2. Heartstopper

Although the popular show has not necessarily stopped due to a lack of views, it has officially come to an end as a series after its "incredible" third season, which has been difficult for some hardcore fans to handle.

Viewers of the romantic show, which was created by English writer Alice Oseman and inspired by her graphic novel of the same name, were left wondering what its fate was on the streaming platform after finishing the successful third season.

There will not be a season four of the comedy-drama, but it was announced last week that Netflix has greenlit a Heartstopper film, which would officially conclude the story of beloved characters Nick and Charlie. According to Deadline, the series creator is "overjoyed" to be able to give streamers more content via a film, but many of them insisted that an additional season would be a better way to say goodbye.

"That is such a relief, but you guys really deserved that final season," wrote a streamer on Oseman's Instagram announcement.

"Taking my hyperfixations away," posted another fan on X.

3. The Sandman

The comic-based series has had its fans waiting a long time for a second season, and now, they've learned that the second season will be its last.

Allan Heinberg, The Sandman's showrunner, spoke to Variety and confirmed the news, stating that the creative team knew they "only had enough story for one more season."

"We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics' loyal readers as well as fans of our show," he continued.

According to the publication, the announcement of the show's final season didn't come long after allegations of misconduct against Heinberg, which some fans believe could be one of the main reasons why the streaming service chose to only grant them one more go.

"The Sandman belongs to the fans," wrote an upset viewer on X.

"The actors, the set designers, the costume designers. Everyone who works on this show does not deserve to be canceled."

4. Big Mouth

Netflix recently confirmed that the eighth season of the animated comedy series created by actors and comedians Nick Kroll and John Mulaney will be its final one.

While its ending marks an impressive achievement, given it's the "longest-running original scripted series ever produced" on the streaming platform, fans are still devastated that they have to say goodbye to some of their favorite raunchy teenage cartoon characters.

"This is my comfort show and a huge hyperfixation [for me]," wrote a fan on Reddit.

"The fact that it's ending is literally so upsetting."

5. Girls 5Eva

The star-studded musical comedy series featuring Sara Bareilles and Busy Philipps is officially "dead" after three seasons. It's been a bit of a back-and-forth experience for fans who witnessed the series move from Peacock, who tried to cancel it, to Netflix in between seasons two and three.

Unfortunately, the platform switch was not enough to save it. On an episode of her podcast, Doing Her Best, Philipps expressed her disappointment and confusion at the ending of the series, stating, "I guess not enough people watched it or watched it the way that counts."

"I don't know. I actually just don't know."

Fans of the show were just as upset as the actress, writing, "Netflix is eating itself" on Reddit.

"This really sucks," wrote a fan. "This is going to be the thing to finally make me cancel Netflix."

Netflix Customers Are Ready To Ditch Their Subscriptions Amid Show Cancelations

The ending of these series, whether expected or unexpected, as well as a rise in subscription prices, has had fans online questioning if continuing to pay for Netflix's services is worth it anymore.

According to NPR, at the start of this year, it was announced that Netflix customers would have to pay around $18 a month to enjoy their programs without advertisements, which they introduced in 2022.

Some subscribers are beginning to threaten to cancel their pricey subscriptions, especially since some of their favorite series aren't going to carry on.

After learning about the ending of Mindhunter and The Sandman, one X user wrote, "This is why I refuse to pay for Netflix."

"Mindhunter was my favorite Netflix show, and also The Sandman, and [then] they canceled both."

"I'm done with the mid-series cancellations," wrote a Reddit user who expressed wanting to end their Netflix subscription.

"Far too many shows I've been hooked on never had a chance to play out."
