Nick Jonas And Priyanka Chopra Wear Matching Black And White Outfits To The Met Gala
The Jonas Brothers musician and the actress arrived at the Met Gala this Monday, May 5th. The theme of this year's event, which most attendees strive to follow, was based on the Costume Institute's spring exhibition, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's website, the theme focused on "the importance of sartorial style to the formation of Black identities."
Every attendee's dress code was "tailored for you," alluding that their looks should've been inspired by menswear and tailored suits. While it looks like Nick and Priyanka got the memo, the way they executed it received mixed reviews. The couple hit the red carpet as a coordinated black-and-white duo. The singer wore a long-sleeved white shirt with a scarf-like tie hanging from his neck. He paired the shirt with simple black trousers and a cumberbund completed with two silver broaches pinned to the side.
His film-producing wife wore a white halter gown with black polka dots. The dress cinched at her waist via a simple black belt, and she wore long black gloves. Tying her look together, Priyanka wore a large, black 'Carmen Sandiego-esque' hat.
When the couple first hit the infamous carpet, she had on a matching black and white polka dot blazer, which she eventually took off to reveal the rest of the dress. She wore her lengthy, black hair down with little styling underneath the hat, which was tipped to one side.
Internet Users Call Nick And Priyanka's Gala Looks A 'Flop'
While loyal fans of the married couple and parents, who have been together since 2018, praised their Met Gala outfits and thought they looked great, many others on social media disagreed and began trolling the couple for their fashion choices.
When high-quality photos of the couple at the publicized event were released to social media, people wrote numerous comments about how they found their look to be disappointing or not up to par with Met Gala standards.
Priyanka was compared to several fictional characters in her black and white gown and large hat, from Cruella De Vil to Bette Midler's character in the 1988 film Big Business. She was also called "Carmen Sandiego" several times by users, referring to the video game character, who was designed to wear a cinched coat and large hat.
"She's wearing a hat for both of them," wrote an Instagram user under photos of the couple.
"Nick Jonas flop of the year," added another.
"Was the theme 101 Dalmatians?" asked another Instagram user, as an additional commenter wrote, "It's giving Kentucky Derby."
"What a joke," added another.
Other social media users noted they felt the outfits were "boring" and that their posing together in the black and white looks was "cringe." It seems that the usually trendy couple missed the mark this time and fell under the category of least favorite outfits of the big night for many online.
We'll have to see if they are invited back to the gala next year and redeem themselves in the eyes of fashion enthusiasts.
