Princess Diana Reportedly Worried 'Panorama' Interview Would Negatively Affect Her Sons

The late Princess of Wales' close friend Rosa Monckton revealed to People that she had regrets about her infamous Panorama interview with Martin Bashir, in which she said there were three people in her marriage to Charles, in reference to Camilla.

This is because of how it may have affected Prince William and Prince Harry, who were 15 and 12 respectively at the time.

"She told me she regretted doing it because of the harm she thought it had done to her boys," Monckton reportedly told the mag, revealing that Princess Diana made the admission to her while they were in Greece just 10 days before her death.

Princess Diana Became More Guarded Following The 'Panorama' Interview

Monckton also revealed that the then Princess of Wales became more guarded with friends and family following the interview, which she believes Diana only agreed to because she was "frail."

She added: "She kept it all in. [Bashir] told her she couldn't talk about it. She cut people out because of that."

Both Prince William and Prince Harry have spoken about the interview in the years since, especially after The Dyson Report – an independent investigation published in May 2021 – found that the BBC acted improperly in its handling of the interview. The report concluded that Bashir had used "deceitful" methods, including faking documents, to secure the interview.

What Have Prince William And Prince Harry Said About Their Mom's Interview?

Prince William previously said that Bashir and BBC leaders let his mother down, and the deception behind the interview contributed to her "fear, paranoia and isolation."

"She was failed not just by a rogue reporter but by leaders at the BBC who looked the other way rather than asking the tough questions," Prince William previously said, adding: "These failings not only let my mother down and my family down, they let the public down too."

Prince Harry touched on it in his and Meghan Markle's controversial Harry & Meghan Netflix docuseries. He explained: "I think we all now know that she was deceived into giving the interview, but at the same time, she spoke the truth of her experience."

"My mom was harassed throughout her life with my dad, but after they separated the harassment went to new levels," he continued. "The moment that she divorced, the moment she left the institution, then she was by herself. Yes, she may well have been one of the most influential and powerful people in the world but she was completely exposed to this."
