Says Gwyneth: 'It Still Counts!'
During a recent appearance on Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop podcast, Gwyneth seemed to suddenly remember that Scarlett had been in a serious relationship with Ryan: "Oh that's right!" exclaimed Gwyneth, "I forgot that you were married to Ryan Reynolds! Goals!"
The Marriage Story actress took the mention in stride: "Yes!" she replied, "We weren't married very long."
"It still counts!" remarked Gwyneth. Perhaps sensing that Scarlett was opening to talking a little more about her ex-husband, the Goop diva pressed onward—"We love a good Ryan Reynolds in our home," she said, referring to her family with husband Brad Falchuck.
The Black Widow star agreed, "He's a good guy!" Ah, we love to hear it.
Two Big-Name Stars, One Little-Known Relationship
Despite being two big-name stars—though both of their celebrity has only exploded since their marriage ended—Scarlett and Ryan were barely ever seen in public together during the entirety of their marriage from 2008-2011. They were not a red carpet couple: some of the only pictures of them together at all are from the auditorium of the 2010 Tony Awards, an event at which Scarlett won the Tony for Best Featured Actress in a Play. In her acceptance speech, she made sure to thank "[Her] Canadian", as she referred to Ryan, and stated that she "never could have done it without [his] support."
After their divorce, both went on to marry other people and have families, and rarely ever referred to their past relationship, leading the romance to become a footnote of Hollywood history...until last week, of course!
The Goop podcast conversation moved away from Ryan, but even the short reference was a big deal considering how little information about the pair's marriage is known to the general public. It's refreshing to see exes speak kindly of their past flings—and, considering how happy Ryan and wife Blake Lively and Scarlett and husband Colin Jost seem, it's all shaken out as it should.
