Possibly the greatest fashion challenge a woman will ever face is trying to appropriately transition her wardrobe from winter to spring. The climate during the early spring months is not ideal for fashion. It’s entirely too cold in the mornings and too warm midday to plan your outfits accordingly. To help us better put together a transitional wardrobe for the spring and get ahead on this season’s latest fashion trends, we spoke with a stylist who gave us the best advice.

As winter comes to a close and spring starts up, the weather can be a really tricky thing. When it comes to fashion during the months of March, April, and even the beginning of May, you have to let the weather dictate your outfit choices entirely. To start, you should get into the habit of checking the weather every day before you get dressed, if you don’t already.

At the very beginning of spring, even though we’re all super excited to break out our sandals, shorts, and sundresses, the weather is often not permitting. The start of spring isn’t very warm at all if you think about it. Realistically, as much as we want to put away out winter wool sweaters and clunky boots, it’s not safe to swear them off for the year just yet.

By the time winter ends, we’re all so done with our cold weather clothes, it’s not even funny. But instead of boycotting your entire closet of winter clothes you need to find new, creative, and unique ways to incorporate them into your spring wardrobe.

To transition your wardrobe from winter to spring flawlessly, Ellyn Berghoff, Freelance Stylist and Assistant to shoe designer Tabitha Simmons, has a few fashion tips.

“Keep a few knits in your closet to use as layering pieces!” is Berghoff’s biggest fashion tip for the perfect spring wardrobe. In order to spice up your spring wardrobe, incorporate a few of your best layering pieces from winter. You can easily wear your favorite spring dresses, even when it’s a little chilly out, by pairing a cozy knit sweater over top.

“A thin knit to pair under a denim jumpsuit (my go-to), a loose cable knit to go over a maxi dress, or a BF cardigan to toss on with a pair of cutoffs for your walk to work when you’re met with a morning breeze!” said Berghoff.

You can even try double layering on pieces to give your outfit a little more flare. Instead of wearing just one coat overtop of a thin shirt, pair a leather moto jacket with a cardigan and wear both over a basic t-shirt.

The more creative you get with your spring layering, the more fun you’ll have with your winter fashion items. Layering is your best bet for transitional fashion because it saves you money in the long run, as well. If you reuse some of your favorite pieces from last season, you don’t have to buy all new ones for the next season. Using some of the same clothing items all year helps you really get your money’s worth out of them. If you invest in an expensive cashmere sweater but wear it all year round, the price pays off in the long run. See, it’s totally justifiable to splurge sometimes!

Even though this styling trick doesn’t have to cost you anything, there is always the option of stocking up on new transitional wardrobe pieces for spring. In addition to her styling tips,  Ellyn Berghoff shared her favorite spring wardrobe essentials below!
