You may assume that “natural” equals “safe,” especially when it comes to supplements, which are meant to give your health a simple boost. Unfortunately, though, the truth is that many supplements can come with serious risks. Even herbal options can cause damage to your organs, including your pancreas.

“Among the riskiest supplements for the pancreas are those that are marketed for detox or fat burning,” warns Dr. Jefferey Chester, DO, Medical Director at The Ohana Luxury Addiction Treatment Center. “These often put stress on the pancreas.” We spoke to Dr. Chester to learn about a few of the most dangerous options, from bitter orange to seemingly harmless vitamin D. Find all of his warnings below.

1. Bitter Orange

While it may be touted as a good option for fat-burning, bitter orange may do more harm than good. "It can raise heart rate and blood pressure. This can place stress on the pancreas," explains Dr. Chester. Instead of relying on quick fixes, he recommends focusing on sustainable lifestyle changes. "A safer alternative for weight management is to focus on exercise and diet changes. You can also talk to your doctor about FDA-approved medications for weight loss."

2. Green Tea Extract

While sipping green tea is generally highly beneficial, its concentrated supplement form is another story. "This can be a risk to the pancreas in high doses. Concentrated green tea extract has been linked to pancreatitis. It can be toxic to the liver," Dr. Chester cautions. As with anything, moderation is key. "You can drink green tea in moderation. Matcha is also fine in moderation, as well. This provides antioxidants without stressing the pancreas."

3. Vitamin D (in High Doses)

Vitamin D is essential for bone health, mood, and immunity—but more isn’t always better. "High doses of vitamin D can be toxic. It can lead to organ inflammation. This may affect the pancreas," says Dr. Chester. "It’s safer to take only the recommended daily allowances of vitamin D. Before supplementing, consider getting your levels checked with your physician to see if it’s even necessary."

4. Valproic Acid-Containing Herbal Blends

Some supplements marketed for mood support contain compounds similar to prescription medications. "These supplements are often marketed for mood issues. The problem is that they can mimic the prescription of valproic acid, which is linked to pancreatitis," Dr. Chester explains. If you’re struggling with low-mood, he recommends alternative methods over supplementation: "An alternative…is to seek help from a medical or mental health professional. Many evidence-based treatments for mood issues are safe and effective." Got it!

5. Detox and Fat-Burning Supplements in General

Beyond the specific examples, Dr. Chester warns that detox teas, fat-burning pills, and other "quick-fix" formulas are among the most dangerous. "Among the riskiest supplements for the pancreas are those that are marketed for detox or fat burning," he notes. They can contain multiple stimulants or herbal compounds that overstress the pancreas. Instead of turning to these harmful supplements, stick to a healthy diet, regular exercise, and care from your doctor. Because supplements don't work miracles.
