An anti-aging skincare regimen is incomplete without careful attention to your diet.

Adding certain anti-aging ingredients to your regular diet is essential. But, just as crucial, is what you don’t eat. Specifically, staying away from foods and ingredients that can speed up your skin’s aging process is one way of accomplishing a more youthful look.

And one of the most important ingredients to avoid is sugar.

Sugar

Too much sugar in any diet is a problem, but if you are concerned with signs of aging, this ingredient could lead to even more issues.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, "Excess processed sugar in your diet, even in small amounts can cause dark circles, wrinkles, dehydrate skin and can fast track the aging process."

The article continues, citing one of the problems that can result from too much sugar--and how it can impact your skin.

Specifically, foods with too much sugar can lead to inflammation. Kara Kara Landau, a spokeswoman with the Dietitians Association of Australia, explains, "Inflammation has been associated with a diet high in high GI foods."

The article explains that this can lead to an array of problems, including "broken capillaries, loss of skin elasticity, and breakdown of cells."

Healthline also explains how too much sugar can harm your skin in a different way. The article explains, "[S]ugar contributes to the formation of collagen-damaging AGEs."

"When our sugar levels are elevated, this AGE process is stimulated. It’s sped up even more if sunlight is involved," the outlet continues.

With that in mind, limiting your sugar intake can help keep your collagen levels up and minimize inflammation--both of which can contribute to a more youthful look.
