If you are keeping track of your sugar intake, but hate black coffee, you might be tempted to try out artificial sweeteners that are low calorie. Unfortunately, these artificial sweeteners are not as diet friendly as they may seem. In fact, using them regularly can lead to big problems for your health and weight.

Artificial sweeteners can lead to digestion problems, including bloat.

 

Bonnie Balk, registered dietitian and health & wellness Expert for Maple Holistics, explained the dangers of artificial sweeteners: "Since the body cannot digest artificial sweeteners (such as sorbitol, sucralose, Acesulfame-K), they pass along the intestines and ferment there instead. This lack of digestion leads to increased gas, bloating, stomach pains, and diarrhea."

With that in mind, if you are regularly opting for low calorie artificial sweeteners, it's time to reconsider--especially if you are experiencing any of the side effects Balk listed.

 

Instead, try using natural sweeteners to flavor your coffee.

Honey and maple syrup are two popular choices. The natural sugars found in these ingredients can help sweeten black coffee.

 

Stevia is another popular sweetener you can substitute in for sugar. Plus, according to Healthline, there are other health benefits as well "such as reduced calorie intake, blood sugar levels, and risk of cavities."

With that in mind, you don't need to turn to artificial sweeteners for a weight loss friendly cup of coffee. Instead, using natural sources of real sugar or adding a few drops of Stevia to your coffee can be a healthier alternative.
